Pro Tips for a Stress-Free Indian Move
Book in the middle of the month
Movers are most in-demand from the 25th to 5th of the next month. Book mid-month for better rates and more availability.
Get a video survey done first
Ask movers to do a video survey via WhatsApp before finalising the quote. This prevents surprise charges on moving day.
Label boxes room-by-room
Write the destination room on every box, not just the origin room. "Kitchen → New Home Kitchen" speeds up unpacking 3x.
Insist on a written contract
Never confirm a move without a written agreement listing inventory, price, insurance terms, and damage liability.
Never pay 100% upfront
Pay 10–20% advance, 50% on loading, and the balance only after delivery and inspection. This protects you if something goes wrong.
Keep valuables with yourself
Cash, jewellery, important documents, and irreplaceable items should travel with you — not in the moving truck.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I start planning my house shift in India?+
Start planning at least 4–6 weeks before your move date. For inter-city moves, book movers at least 3 weeks in advance. Month-end and festive season moves (October–January) should be booked 4–6 weeks ahead due to high demand.
What documents should I keep with me during shifting?+
Keep these with you — never load in the truck: Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, property papers, insurance documents, bank passbooks, children's school certificates, vehicle RC and insurance, and employment/transfer letters. Store in a single carry bag.
What is an Essentials Box and what should go in it?+
An Essentials Box contains everything you will need for the first 48–72 hours at your new home: mobile chargers, toiletries, 2 sets of clothes per family member, bedsheets, towels, basic kitchenware (kettle, cups), snacks, children's toys or comfort items, medicines, and important documents.
How do I update my address after moving in India?+
Key address updates: (1) Aadhaar — visit the nearest Aadhaar centre or update online at uidai.gov.in. (2) PAN — update via income tax portal. (3) Driving licence/voter ID — visit RTO/BLO office. (4) Bank — visit home branch or update via net banking. (5) LPG connection — call your distributor. (6) EPF — update via EPFO portal.
What should I do if my goods are damaged during the move?+
Do not sign the delivery receipt if you notice damage. Photograph the damage immediately before unpacking further. Report to the mover in writing within 48 hours. File an insurance claim with the transporter's insurer. Report the issue on PackersBazaar.in's grievance portal for mediation support.
