The Ultimate Moving Checklist for Indian Households (2026)

A complete 8-week-to-moving-day checklist for Indian households — including the address update list, document checklist, and the first-week-in-new-home setup.

Use this checklist to stay organised from the moment you decide to move until you are fully settled in the new home. The Indian context adds a few categories most international checklists miss — Aadhaar updates, society NOCs, school transfer certificates, gas connection transfers, and the various local-government quirks that vary by state. Treat each section as a single day of work and you will avoid the last-minute scramble that turns moves into nightmares.

Before You Commit: The Decision Phase

Before you sign anything with movers, work through these questions:

  • Why are you moving (job, family, lifestyle)? This affects which costs are tax-deductible and whether your employer should bear them.
  • What is your hard deadline? A flexible date saves 15–25% on cost.
  • Have you visited the new home in person (or at least video-called)? Photos are often misleading on space and natural light.
  • Have you confirmed the school admission for the new city if you have school-going children? Mid-session admissions can be very difficult.
  • Do you have written confirmation from your new landlord on rent, security deposit terms, and lease duration?
  • Is your current lease termination on a clean basis (notice period given in writing, security deposit refund agreed)?

Resolve all of these before you book the movers — pulling out of a move you have already booked typically forfeits 20–50% of the advance.

8 Weeks Before Moving

  • Set your moving budget; include movers, packing materials, transit insurance, deposit at new home, brokerage, first month's rent, new appliances if needed, and a 15% buffer for surprises
  • Research and shortlist 4–5 verified movers; use [PackersBazaar.in's free quote tool](/movers) to receive 3–4 quotes from verified, GST-registered companies in 30 minutes
  • Get written quotes from at least 3 companies — verbal quotes are not comparable
  • Book the mover and confirm date in writing; pay only the agreed advance (10–20%)
  • Start decluttering: sell on OLX/Quikr, donate to GiveIndia/Goonj, or discard items you do not need. Every cubic foot you do not move saves money
  • Notify your landlord about your vacating date — check your lease for the required notice period (typically 30–60 days)
  • If you are buying the new home: confirm registration date, key handover, and society NOC requirements

6 Weeks Before Moving

  • Start collecting packing materials if you are packing yourself — see our [fragile items guide](/blog/how-to-pack-fragile-items) for the materials list
  • Create a detailed inventory of all items being moved; spreadsheet or app
  • Arrange transit insurance for valuables — comprehensive coverage above the basic ₹50,000 included in mover quotes
  • Notify your child's school of the transfer; request Transfer Certificate, Bonafide Certificate, and last two terms' report cards
  • Inform your employer of the change of address in writing — this affects HRA documentation, EPF address, and provident-fund correspondence
  • Start visiting the new neighbourhood if you have not already: identify grocery store, pharmacy, hospital, ATM, and the nearest petrol pump
  • If moving cities: research mobile network coverage at the new address (a Jio SIM that works in Bangalore can have weak signal in some Mumbai pockets, and vice versa)

4 Weeks Before Moving

  • Begin packing non-essential items — books, off-season clothes, décor, kitchen items you rarely use
  • Label every box with: contents (top), destination room (side), and "FRAGILE" if applicable
  • Arrange vehicle transport (car, bike) if you are not driving to the destination
  • Book professional cleaners for the old home if your lease requires it for security deposit refund
  • Update address with bank (start with the bank where your salary is credited — they often take 2 weeks to update)
  • Update address with the income tax department (e-filing portal → Profile → Update address)
  • Cancel any maid, cook, security, or service subscriptions tied to the current address
  • Inform your child's coaching classes / tuition centres of the transfer
  • If you have a pet: book pet transport, get the latest vaccination certificate, arrange travel crate
  • Schedule cancellation of newspaper and milk delivery for moving day

2 Weeks Before Moving

  • Pack most rooms except daily essentials
  • Confirm moving date and time with movers in writing — get the truck registration number and driver's mobile
  • Arrange parking permission for moving trucks at both addresses — Mumbai and Bangalore societies are particularly strict
  • Prepare a "first night box" with essentials for the first night in the new home (see "Moving Day" below for contents)
  • Disconnect appliances: defrost the refrigerator at least 24 hours before move, drain water from the washing machine, empty water from the inverter battery
  • Take final readings of electricity, gas, water meters and photograph them with date stamp
  • Confirm electricity, gas, water disconnection appointments at the old home
  • Confirm electricity, gas, water connection appointments at the new home
  • Pay all outstanding utility bills at the old home in full; keep receipts

1 Week Before Moving

- Complete government address updates: - Aadhaar — uidai.gov.in → Update Address Online (₹50 fee); or visit nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Takes 7–10 days - Driving licence — sarathi.parivahan.gov.in → Apply for change of address; original required at RTO visit. Some states allow online address change for valid DLs - Voter ID — nvsp.in → Form 8 for address correction; takes 30 days for new card - PAN — pan.utiitsl.com → minor change; ₹107 fee - Confirm utility setup at the new home for moving day: electricity meter active, gas connection transferred or set up, water connection active, broadband/wi-fi installation scheduled - Pack important documents in a separate, clearly labelled folder — original property papers, lease agreement, insurance policies, school certificates, passport, vehicle RC and insurance, bank passbooks - Confirm new home access arrangements (keys, building access, parking spot for moving truck) - Withdraw cash for moving-day tips and emergencies — even with UPI, some labourers prefer cash - Get your car serviced if you are driving to the new city - Pack a 5-day suitcase per family member of "post-move clothes" — assume some boxes will not be opened immediately

Moving Day

  • Be present for the entire loading process; do not leave the crew alone with your goods
  • Check every room, cupboard, drawer, balcony, terrace, and storage space before the truck leaves
  • Take photos of the old home condition before movers arrive and after they leave — these protect your security deposit
  • Get a signed inventory receipt from the moving crew listing every box and item loaded
  • Keep these with you (not in the truck): cash, jewellery, original documents, laptops with sensitive data, prescription medications, mobile chargers
  • Take final meter readings at the old home and photograph
  • Hand over keys to landlord or new tenant with a signed acknowledgement
  • Carry the "first night box" in your personal vehicle: bedsheets and pillow per person, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, towel), 2 days of clothes per person, basic kitchenware (kettle, 2 cups, plates), snacks and water, charger and power bank, prescription medications, basic tools (screwdriver, scissors, torch), toilet paper, salt and pepper

The First Week in the New Home

  • Inspect inventory against the signed receipt — report any damage or missing items within 24 hours in writing to the mover (most insurance policies have a 48-hour reporting requirement)
  • Verify all electrical sockets, water taps, and gas connections work
  • Set up internet — even with mobile data, family communications and work depend on stable wi-fi
  • Locate the building circuit breaker, water shut-off valve, gas shut-off valve, and main entrance backup keys
  • Meet immediate neighbours (the floor above, below, and either side) — much easier the first week than later
  • Locate the nearest hospital with 24/7 emergency, the nearest pharmacy, and the nearest ATM of your bank
  • Update Google Maps "Home" pin to the new address and "Work" pin if relevant
  • Take photographs of any pre-existing damage to walls, floors, fittings — this protects your security deposit when you eventually move out
  • Set up address forwarding for any subscriptions you forgot — Amazon, Flipkart, magazines, OTT account billing addresses
  • Register at the local police station if your state requires tenant verification (Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi NCR for tenants in some societies)
  • Update your address on health insurance, employer records, and on Aadhaar-linked services (driving licence, PAN, voter ID — if you have not already)

Address-Update Checklist (everything you might forget)

After Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, and voter ID, also update:

  • All bank accounts (savings, current, NRI accounts)
  • All credit and debit cards
  • Mutual fund / demat account KYC
  • LIC and health insurance policies
  • EPF / NPS retirement accounts
  • GST registration if you have a small business
  • Professional licences (CA, doctor, lawyer registrations)
  • Children's school admission records and transfer certificates
  • Magazine and journal subscriptions
  • Online shopping default address (Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra)
  • Food delivery default address (Swiggy, Zomato)
  • Cab service default address (Uber, Ola)
  • OTT subscription billing addresses (Netflix, Prime, Disney+, etc.)
  • Mobile and broadband billing addresses
  • Loan accounts (home loan, car loan, personal loan)
  • Vehicle insurance and pollution-under-control certificate address
  • Any club memberships, gym, library

That is roughly 25 services to update. Allow two weekends for the full update cycle.

Documents to Keep With You (Never in the Truck)

A single folder containing:

  • Aadhaar cards for every family member
  • PAN cards
  • Passports
  • Original property documents (sale deed, lease, NOCs)
  • Insurance policies (life, health, motor, transit)
  • Last 3 months of bank statements
  • Last 2 years of income tax returns
  • Children's birth certificates, school transfer certificates, last report cards
  • Vehicle Registration Certificate and insurance papers
  • Original prescriptions for any long-term medications
  • Wills, power-of-attorney documents
  • Marriage certificate
  • Mover's contract and signed inventory list

Lose this folder and replacing the documents takes months. Carry it in your personal vehicle, in your hand luggage if flying, and never let it out of your sight on moving day.
